Notes

  1.  Open Actions
    1. R&S slide deck - Kevin is still struggling with getting CIOs and Presidents to understand the concept of "entity category" in 30 seconds or less. We need an elevator pitch. They also don't understand the difference between institutional SSO and federated login. Note that a slide deck will be useful for APAN
      1. Anecdote: researchers who are accessing something through their campus account don't realize that's federation; it's just an extension of SSO
  2. Administrivia
    • REFEDS Budget - funded for our current commitments, but no more

    • EOY 2019 - We’re still waiting on the finance report for December from GEANT’s finance team; Heather to send the draft to SC

  3. Workplan 2020 review
  4. Working with other FIM groups
    1. Leveraging expertise and resources
    2. FIM4R, FIM4L, SeamlessAccess,
    3. ORCID - far better resourced, but a good example to see how to do this well: aim for one voice through many channels, leveraging their areas of expertise and/or resources to create more documentation, videos, etc
    4. eduGAIN is going to deliver some new live training soon
    5. Are there any possible partnerships with OIDF? Is there any generic material that they could create that we could both benefit from?
  5. Meeting Replacements
    1. Look at what ORCID does in terms of how they bring in so many different community members/sectors; they have more funding to focus on outreach, but it shows in how they bring more people to the table
    2. EOSC - can we get them to come in and talk about what they're doing? It's actually all the same people, just with more of a political bent to it
    3. FIM4R conference - They are finding that the 1-1.5 day meetings aren't enough time, and all those meetings focus on the advanced topics. They're thinking of a 3-day bigger conference with a track new to the field (policy, technology, tools) and an advanced track. They may even have a sponsor. Targeting April 2021; maybe align with the RDA in Edinburgh - https://www.rd-alliance.org/plenary-meetings/future-plenaries
    4. There is a lot of meeting fatigue at this point, so setting up more meetings might not be great unless we have something to share; maybe focus on the meetings and direct people to Slack for discussion?
      1. Note that a problem with slack is information retention - there's no easy archive to search years late
      2. Bring this up again on the next meeting; more to discuss here
  6. REFEDS Video(s)
    1. Should leverage the SeamlessAccess videos that will be coming out soon, too
    2. What about the old SURF videos about federation? Are those still available?
