Thoughts from the REFEDS meeting
Is TNC the best place to have a REFEDS?
It is very convenient for everyone, but TNC is also very expensive and bosses may not be willing to pay for the whole event. Is this still the right thing?
What other options could there be? Having it separate, people having to come here would exacerbate their own budget issues. Our biggest problem, according to the survey, is funding, so this at least gets them the most value for the dollar
Should we have something more east? The challenge there is that you get a very different audience, a very different level. It’s where much of the REFEDS community was 10 years ago. Need to talk more to Terry (TF-IAM) about how to support their mission.
Worth noting that the budget problems remains in trying to get people to Asia
Perhaps expand REFEDS by not always have the same kind of meeting. Perhaps a larger allocation of time that is geared towards specific groups. The message will change depending on what the regions need. Might want to play with the idea as to whether a region should create a satellite REFEDS.
That is something like what TF-IAM does.
is there anyone in Latin/South America that would be willing to serve that role? We could also fund travel for other people to go to those regions.
Community engaging and building is one aspect, but the other aspect is REFEDS as a more formal standards organization. How would satellite groups feed into consensus? Would we have regional consensus for local items? Global consensus for global issues?
Having REFEDS on Sunday has pros/cons. The only other option is Thursday. If we try Sunday, it sets us up for some opportunity to think during the week.
Could TNC shift to start on Tuesday?
There were over 100 people in the room at REFEDS this year; biggest ever. It did seem much more welcoming, fewer inside jokes
Chairing the intros should include more context setting, a 2-minute “what this session is about”
Maybe an opening session of map of changes since last time; what WGs are working on now are part of that
Always need to include something about what REFEDS is
Potentially a webinar in advance, “Intro to REFEDS”
Look at the registrations, include a tick box as to whether it is their first REFEDS meeting, and then do some initial outreach (look for commonalities and then later consider if any of this can create generalized materials)
Add to a future agenda: what further can we do with the satellite REFEDS idea and outreach (Emerging Federations REFEDS to start, but then it might be more)
Things that have arisen during TNC that we might want to follow up on:
Hackathon
- It needs to be a program so that we can run this elsewhere and/or again in the world. Let’s do this in key regions.
Nicole Harris to reach out to TechEx to run something there; run it during the track sessions so that people could come and go
SC agrees to fund Heather’s time to work on this and travel to Copenhagen, TechEx
Will follow up after both events to see how well it works and see if something in Asia and/or more frequently is a good idea
Lots of side meetings
Make sure the notes are on the wiki if possible
Nicole Harris to send out a call to request updates from the community about the side meetings they had, esp. if anything looks like it could be a work package for 2020
Heather Flanagan to set up the 2020 Workplan Planning template
OIDCre, Fed 2.0
Keep an eye on how those might intersect, and in considering that, feed back into the specification
Also, invite more OIDC purists
Need to move the OIDCre; it’s not a fit as a WG anymore and we just need to make a statement that REFEDS accept the specs out of the OIDF; ask Davide and Niels what they actually need from REFEDS
Heather Flanagan to follow up with Davide and Niels about what is needed by OIDCre from the REFEDS community
Maybe more real-world use cases from a bigger community would be helpful
