Notes

  1. Open Actions
    1. Heather - REFEDS Distinguished Engineer; will start to work on the mentor lists when we actually have applicants. Closing the action.

    2. Licia - there is an open open issue around REEP and whether we continue to support it. Licia still needs to follow up.

    3. Nicole - there is definitely funding available to take forward the recommendation from the Service Catalog white paper. It’s still somewhat uncertain exactly how far this will go or what the exact next steps will be. Closing the action.

    4. Nicole - letter to CEO/CIOs not yet supporting SIRTFI is not done yet

  2. Administrivia
    1. REFEDS Meetings 2019 - proposals.
      1. Many good proposals received; we will have a full meeting. There will also be the usual updates from ongoing REFEDS work items.

      2. FIMR4 will present; hoping to also get FIM4L (Federated Identity Management for Libraries) to also present.

      3. May suggest that federations do some homework on a few topics prior to the meeting. Tom Barton will reach out to Rhys Smith about discussing the need for a federation-wide baseline and if/how too make this kind of thing more broadly applicable. Pål Axelsson will investigate the gaps that would prevent a federation-wide baseline in SWAMID.

      4. OpenAthens has made a request to have a session as well; they must not be sales-y. Tom suggests that there be a way to tie them into a particular REFEDS participant to co-present with so they can talk about what problems were solved.

      5. AAF and ShareID is an example of a commercial vendor partnered with a REFEDS community member on how a product solved a problem.

      6. GEANT T&I ops will be an interested real world use case.

      7. WebauthN might be interesting as a continuation of conversations held at TIIME. Perhaps combine this with the Fed 2.0 report?

      • Nicole Harris will post a draft agenda for the upcoming REFEDS meeting

    2. Interim REFEDS meetings, unconference style
      1. There seems to be some appetite for a separate REFEDS unconference.

      2. The FIM4R meeting does tend to use TIIME still to meet; if we have a REFEDS unconference, we need to make sure we include FIM4R, FIM4L, and potentially others, while still leaving them their general meeting at TIIME.

      3. Perhaps consider trying to restructure the REFEDS day so there is more room for BoFs, unconference-ness, or something else? It’s not very flexible to do this at TNC (not enough physical space), but perhaps there would be other times and other occasions.

  3. Distinguished Engineer grant proposal - update and potential review of candidates
    1. See - https://docs.google.com/document/d/1CnybbVU24Q77xJrSO3Za9lOsbcoGsBApzaN0ynGOAcg/edit?usp=sharing
      1. Expect to have several candidates, but not until the last minute. The SC will be the selection committee, and Heather will put together a list of candidates that meet the basic criteria.

  4. REFEDS Workplan 2019
    1. Logos for entity categories / specifications
      1. Logos for the various items were very popular in InCommon. They acted as “merit badges”. It sparked conversations and highlighted some issues. It makes things seem more professional (or, those items that do not have logos seem unprofessional).

      2. Perhaps think about the various assurance items - should there be separate logos for SFA, MFA, etc? Something we can consider further later.

      3. Should these logos reinforce the REFEDS brand? SIRTFI chose something to have no visible affiliation with any other logo. It makes it separable if it’s ever needed.

      4. If we are doing logos, it would be good to present them all together in one place (so, similar size, shape).

      5. Next step will be to look at R&S, see if we want to use what InCommon designed (https://twitter.com/InCommonUS/status/1057991828207820800), and also look at what CoCo is using.

  5. RA21
    1. NISO public consultation
      1. The Recommended Practice document is expected to be out for public consultation by the end of this month.

      2. The actual service will be available in a beta program supported by SUNET and funded by GEANT’s incubator funding.  Information on that, including the scope of work and the the API documentation to integrate with the persistence service should be available over the next 1-2 months.

      3. The REFEDS Discovery Guidelines will need to be updated, as they are still based on the 2012 ESPRESSO guidelines. Heather is working on that.

  6. AOB
    1. Status of contracts? GEANT is simplifying the process somewhat on their side, and we may see three-year contracts.

    2. Face to face meeting for SC - would be good to have some meeting or social time together.

      • Heather Flanagan to follow up with the SC on face to face meeting possibilities during TNC19.
