Notes

  1. Open Actions
    1. For the R&S spec, we do need to figure out how to better explain the term "entity category", making sure that we're supporting OIDC vocabulary as well as SAML. This is a community-wide problem we should bring up with the full REFEDS community.
  2. Administrivia
    • REFEDS Budget

    • EOY 2019

      • GEANT has a new chief procurement officer; this may have some impact on us getting our reports in a timely fashion
      • Heather will ask Nicole to send a note to SC with an update
  3. Workplan 2020 review
    1. REFEDS Coordination and Management definitely in some upheaval as we are not having our f2f meetings.
    2. Working groups are largely progressing, though slow right now with the summer holidays. Some concern around SPOG, Fed 2.0, and Entity Categories. Will see if these pick up in September.
    3. Standards and Specs - no activity re: logos or the Cloud Cookbook. Heather to follow up with Keith to see what we need to do to move these forward.
  4. Meeting Replacements and Other Ideas
    • Working from a typical REFEDS agenda, ask presenters to work with a small team to record a lightly interactive presentation (e.g., Ann and Tom at ACAMP)

      1. People could engage via Slack with the people who did the recording on the channel to respond to questions
      2. Basecamp experience had more people willing to chat than speak; the Basecamp speakers did use more Zoom surveys to determine engagements
      3. Shorter, live presentations so the speaker has an audience to engage with
      4. Maybe record a panel introduction, then have a later online chat to discuss?
      5. Federation updates
        1. What is the "temperature" of federation activities?
        2. Where are federations focusing now?
        3. What strategies are people following to improve or grow their federations?
      6. If we do the updates early, spread this out over time so we can learn from the sessions and figure out what panels will be of most interest to the community
      7. Maybe take the opportunity to have a stronger diversity of levels, targeting early, middle, and fully mature federations separately (e.g., newcomer track)
    • Create one slack channel per session to encourage Q&A during and after the session

    • Bonus ideas
      1. Use gather.town to encourage "hallway" interactions (free for up to 50 participants)
      2. Have one or two social channels (e.g., #pets-of-refeds, #whats-for-dinner, #mentoring-forum)

      3. Badges for participation (e.g., Credly, Badgr)

        1. Not really something for our culture; possibly too US-centric?
      4. Add language translation for the recordings (Spanish, French, Arabic, Mandarin)

        1. Encourage those speakers who are not fluent in English to do a presentation in their native language, and have English subtitles
        2. We would need a professional translation firm to do this well; we can start by crowdsourcing this
    • Heather Flanagan will put together a full proposal and suggest dates; we do need to do this before the end of the year.
  5. Entity Categories
    1. Status of current consultations
      1. Entity Categories: NISO held a webinar on August 10 geared towards the librarian community. It was well-received, about 55 people attended and asked good questions, but no new comments to the docs. Recording available.  Schema Board meets in early September to review the feedback.
    2. R&S v2
      1. Heather to pick this up in September
  6. SIRTFI
    1. The initial draft came out of a prior (informal?) consultation from about 3 years ago.
    2. The aim is that the current consultation will be adopted by eduGAIN, but it needs a very broad adoption thus the REFEDS consultation
